Spring is coming soon and I am planning on another organic gardening class at the farm. If you are interested please let me know so I can put you on my notification list. I will know the date as it gets closer depending on the weather.
As for now when you are planning to plant just be sure that the seeds you buy are organic and non-gmo. If the seed catalog doesn’t say non-gmo and organic then I would avoid them. Territorial, Johnnys Seeds, Peaceful Valley Grow Organic, Seed Savers, and West Coast Seeds are all non-gmo and mostly organic. There are others I am sure, just these are the ones I order from most often.
Seed Savers is an organization that has been working passionately for 45 years to carefully steward and protect tens of thousands of heirloom seeds. These seeds are housed in a collection (a public-access seed bank) and are available through the exchange. These seeds are the original seeds, the heirloom seeds like grandma used to plant before seeds were altered. I like new things and new ideas and consider myself to be on the front line of healing techniques, yet when it comes to seeds I want the original that God gave us. Unaltered and true to type.
Many seeds now have been altered to the point that they don’t even produce seed. Sterilization of the plant kingdom…uggh! Just so we have to buy more seed. I believe it’s best that we don’t mess with mother nature. Monsanto is trying to take over and buy out all the seed companies so they can enforce their GMO frankinseeds.
GMO seeds are genetically modified organisms. These are toxic to humans and believed to alter the DNA of whomever eats it. I understand that it was created to increase the production but if it is making us sick then that’s a pretty high cost. Please understand that I am not attacking our farmers who are using these seeds but would instead encourage them to consider organic practices.
I personally know a farmer who has switched to all organic even in the sandhills and it has been successful! We are the pioneers of this new time.
The thing that I have learned most from nature is the abundance! I plant one seed and get 100 back. That is if you collect your seed. There is an art to collecting and some seeds require different treatments to grow. We will cover some of this in the organic class.
I encourage everyone to plant something. It connects you to the earth from where our bodies came from and soothes the Soul. Amma, my spiritual teacher has asked each of us to plant 12 trees a year to help our environment and cool the earth. How much fruit would we have if we planted fruit trees? As you can see I am passionate about organic gardening and have done so since 1979.
If you would like more information about organic practices please let me know. I love to share this information with you.
Blessings,
Diane
